Legend has it that the devil once visited a metalsmith & asked for a pair of shoes. So the smith forged a pair of shoes & nailed them to his hooves, causing him searing pain. To take them off, the metalsmith made the devil promise to never come near anything with a horseshoe fashioned from metal, like a home or a person, and hence, the legend materialized.
